What an Actual PR Pro is Currently Reading...

Taylor Ketchum – Vice President

As a PR pro, we see articles all the time such as “5 Books You Must Read as PR Pro” or “Must-Reads to Succeed in PR.” While the books featured in those posts are are probably great reads, I wanted to reflect on the books an ACTUAL PR Pro reads.

Currently my e-reader has more than 150 books from the last two years and I would say I have read 140 of them. My bookshelves have books ranging from multiple Chuck Palahniuk treasures such as Fight Club and Invisible Monsters to multiple female comedic geniuses such as Tina Fey’s Bossypants, Chelsea Handler’s Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me and Mindy Kaling Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? Also collecting some dust is every Nicholas Sparks book ever written, along with the entire Harry Potter Series (I believe they are good things to pass on to my daughter).

As you can tell, my selection is wide, but it keeps things interesting. I am currently reading a few books, all for different reasons. All bring something different.

#GirlBoss: A book many young female professionals are reading these days. So, of course, I thought I needed to jump on the bandwagon. I will say it is an easy read that gets you motivated. “Sophia Amoruso spares no detail in #GIRLBOSS, the story of how she went from dumpster diving teen to founder and CEO of $100 million online retailer Nasty Gal.” –HarpersBazaar.com

Me Before You: If you follow me on social media, you probably know that I make a few appearances each month talking about movies for Harkins Theatres Bricktown...a huge perk of my job because 1. I love talking about movies 2. The anchors and producers are awesome, and I always have a ball with them 3. I get back to my broadcasting days from college, which I always loved. So now I am reading this book for two main reasons: 1. My job, this way I know more background knowledge before the movie hits the big screens and I have to talk about it 2. Sam Claflin is in it, and I loved him in the Hunger Games series; I know I am going to love him playing the male lead. Let me tell you, this book is a little long (e-reader says a little over 300 pages). I use to be able to knock that out in a day, but with a 6-month baby, not so easy.
A Love Story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart? (Source)

When you read a description like, that you almost know what to expect. It’s almost predictable...but I am not done with it yet, so no one spoil it for me, okay?

Dad is Fat: Yes, this is the “Hot Pockets” guy. Can I just say I love Jim Gaffigan? My husband and I truly enjoy his stand up work as he is a good, clean comedian. If you haven’t watched his stuff, check him out on Netflix. But back to his book, as a new mom, this book is filled with so many lines that you just have to laugh at because you have been there. I work to have books like this constantly in my stack and I want to make sure I always have an easy read when my days are crazy and I need 15-30 minutes of laughs during a lunch break or after my daughter goes to sleep. I promise this read will be one you enjoy. (Now, Jim, this was a pretty good plug, how about hooking a girl up to your show in Norman in July?)

So three random books, but all great in their own way. I highly recommend all three, for not only the reading material but the entertainment factor. When you work in a fast-paced industry, you need to look for things to help you relax and enjoy your time off.

Need a laugh right now? I got you covered!
