Kansas Contractors Association
CLIENT NEED
In 2011, Kansas state leaders began pulling money away from the T-works transportation program, designed to fund infrastructure repairs, to fill holes in the state’s general fund. Furthermore, Senate Bill 463 was introduced in 2016 to redirect sales tax transfers from the Kansas Department of Transportation to the state’s general fund. These transfers would divert even more money away from road and bridge funding. The Kansas Contractors Association (KCA) enlisted Jones Public Relations (Jones PR) to develop a campaign to prevent SB463 from passing.
CHALLENGE
▶ Develop a campaign to run from April 1 to April 27
▶ Encourage public to contact representatives to vote against SB463
OUR STRATEGIC SOLUTION
▶ Designed the “Detour/Green Light” campaign
▶ Utilized print, online and social media ads, earned media, direct mail, engagement and advocacy building
▶ Added an advocacy application to the savekansasroads.com website
▶ Designed full-page color “Detour/Green Light” ads in Kansas newspapers
▶ Targeted legislators who didn’t support infrastructure funding
▶ Encouraged constituents to contact legislators to vote against SB463
▶ Distributed press releases to markets where a “Detour/Green Light” ad ran
▶ Geo-targeted legislators with a “Detour/Green Light” Facebook ad
▶ Sent postcards to Kansas city council to highlight the negative impact SB463 would have
POWERFUL RESULTS
▶ SB463 died on June 1, 2016, keeping Kansas’ infrastructure intact
