When my son's teacher asked if I could come to his class and talk about my career, I casually said yes and thought to myself, "Talking to a classroom of Pre-K students should be a piece of cake..."
Leading up to my grand appearance, I did not prepare much, which resulted in frantic pleas to my team members for help on what I should do. I decided to take some newspapers (practically relics to these youngsters) and a coloring sheet to explain to these perplexed 4-year-olds that I help people "Tell their stories."
Here are four lessons I learned at my son's Career Day:
1. Always come ready with some PROPS. I think I kept the kids at bay with my constant props of newspapers, sample ads and of course a coloring sheet.
2. Get ready for some hard-hitting ZINGERS. I was asked, "Why I wear a jacket, how many words I can read in the newspaper and what is my favorite donut?"
3. There will be TEARS. My 4-year-old son, Walker, really choked me up when he asked if he could skip school and just come to work with "daddy!" The tear-stream continued as I was leaving when he said, "I just want to go to work with daddy!" --- At least they were good tears. I doubt when he is 12 years old that he will be crying to go to work with me, but in the meantime, I won't forget that the offer still stands.
4. I was the WARM-UP ACT. An OKC Policeman came later in the day and really wowed the kids. Thank god for real heroes. #BackTheBlue.
