A 4 Step Perseverance Process for your 9-5

Beverly Hedges – Vice President

By: Will Overlander

1) Don’t Take Things Personally

You shouldn’t take it personally when things don’t go your way. Business decisions don’t always play out logically due to factors beyond your control. Remain calm and don’t get defensive. Remember, you don’t have to justify your actions all of the time.

2) Remain Fearless

Throughout a day, week, month, year and even your career, you will see a lot of ups and downs. Understand that when you begin to fear certain situations, you are making it harder on yourself to be rational and objective. When you panic, you freeze up and lose focus. If you can remain confident and objective, eventually the situations that once created stress will become manageable.

3) Be Decisive

Hesitation and tentativeness can yield poor results in your work. Don’t show any signs of doubt so that you can be a confident voice and others will have confidence in you, as they trust your opinions. A timid nature will not instill confidence from your superiors in your ability to grow and take on more responsibilities.

4) Take Accountability

This is perhaps the most difficult characteristic because it requires an acknowledgment of failure. Step up and accept your mistakes. Errors happen, errors can be fixed and can be learning opportunities. Take from the mistake what needs to be corrected and apply it in the future. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because that is when they become most prevalent. Instead, work to the best of your ability. If a mistake is part of that process, own it and learn from that process.
